MAGIX Vegas 14 Pro

Vegas Pro 14 has been with us since 20/09/16 and so it’s high time we reviewed the latest incarnation of the software from new owners MAGIX.

Vegas Pro has been with us for many years and has seen a lot of changes as well as three owners. Through its various incarnations, the program has been refined and improved but have new owners brought anything to the table to shake things up and is this a good thing for users?

Vegas Pro is probably the favoured choice by YouTubers despite the fact that there are more consumer-friendly versions of the software available which is incredible considering the daunting amount of options and settings that a first time user would have to understand before they could produce anything.

I remember when I first bought Sony Vegas Pro 11, I think I spent more than two weeks rendering videos that looked terrible and was afraid to make “too many cuts in case that thing happened where everything moved funny and the layout changed” and in fact I remember buying Movie Studio 12 about two weeks later as it is the consumer version of the software and finding it a little easier to use initially but with all things, I returned to the big boy when I couldn’t create an effect I wanted.

Moving on then and I bought Vegas Pro 13. I use the software nearly every day and have come to love it despite some minor annoyances. Of all the issues I had with the software, the thing that drove me insane was Sony’s insistence on having smart resample on by default. I mainly upload gameplay and this can make footage look so pixelated that it’s almost unwatchable. I have spent hours rendering footage only to realise that I had forgotten to disable resample on one of the cuts.

I was overjoyed then when I realised I can disable resample for an entire project, this alone will save me days of rendering over the course of a year that I would have otherwise had to redo. I was happy then that my first impression appeared to show MAGIX Software GmbH appear to have listened to their customer base before launching version 14.

So what else is new and good?

As well as over 30 bug fixes they have also:

Added up to 40x video velocity so you can create extreme fast motion effects with the new higher velocity limit. Combine with the event playback rate for a maximum clip velocity of 40 time’s normal speed.

Added Smart zoom so you can define the focal point of your video regardless of what was originally framed in camera. Use keyframing techniques to create exact zooms in post-production that your videographer didn’t shoot in the field.

Smart Adaptive DE-interlacing which will transform even the fastest paced DE-interlaced material to modern progressive footage which, according to MAGIX, will maintain stunning quality and clarity.

Added Hover Scrub technology to allow you to quickly scrub through footage in the Trimmer window, you can add In and Out points on the fly. This enables you to quickly identify just the important portion of your video clip and then add it to your timeline.

You can upscale HD footage for use in 4K and UHD projects, Magix says their Smart Upscaling technology gives you “the power to use your archived HD footage in your 4K productions.”

Red Camera support which means you can import and edit recordings with the latest RED digital cameras.

Updated support for BlackMagic hardware including the 4K Extreme and Extreme 3D

Added more post effects, lift, gamma and gain.

Updated the support for AJA hardware.

Added Resample mode drop down list (All of YouTube gaming thanks you for this).

Improved playback and editing performance if you use a Dynamic RAM preview cache larger than 200MB.

Gamma Calculations got an upgrade for still image sequence renders. Levels for 32-bit floating point video levels and full range with nonlinear gamma will show more consistent results with 8-bit levels.

Added a Group Video and Audio Events script (Tools > Scripting) to simplify audio and video event grouping from an imported EDL.

Changed the look and feel of most icons.

There is now support for HEVC.H265 files.

Native support for ProRes 422 without needing QuickTime.

Some of the notable RED Camera fixes include an issue that caused certain clips to fail to load when you upgraded and they fixed a colour cast that could occur in clips shot with RED Motion Mount on the updated firmware.

The minute you open the software it looks better, more modern and the icons look really cool, a notable omission for a modern piece of software is an option to use a dark theme but this aside the layout is familiar and new all at the same time.

Nothing appears to be any different than in Vegas 13 when it comes to usability, everything is easy to find and if you are familiar with any of the previous products then you will be right at home using Vegas 14.

I think it is an often overlooked point when you are thinking about what is essentially a tool, will this tool allow me to do what I want without getting in the way? I have to say of Vegas 14 the answer is yes, I know this because after about 20 minutes I wasn’t thinking about the software I was just editing a video and I wanted to do that as quickly and efficiently as possible whilst being able to create the content I wanted. This is the job of a tool, it should allow you to do what you want to do without having to think about it.

In fact, things were certainly a lot zippier than in the previous version. The hover scrub was really responsive and I was using the preview window a lot more to find the sections of the video I wanted.

The playback window seems to have had an upgrade too. I use three monitors so when I preview changes I use one of my other monitors and I was able to use the best quality preview without an issue and this could be in my mind but the quality seemed better than in Vegas 13. Of course, this will very much depend on your system but my i7 4790k and GTX 980 were doing very well.

You can now speed up video playback by up to 1000% using a combination of Velocity Envelope and Playback Rate. This is another requested feature that has finally manifested thanks to MAGIX and will make a lot of people very happy. After I sped some test video up to 1000% I quickly rendered a preview (Shift+B), playback was smooth and looked fantastic.

I played around with some of the video FX built right in and having checked, the Vegas Vignette is all that is new however, as with most of the FX it looks brilliant and I can see that being put to good use by videographers everywhere.

The NewBlueFX Titler Pro Express and Titler Pro 3 included with my version of Vegas 14 Pro are a fantastic addition especially if you don’t have a good titling program. I first thought they might be a bit of a gimmick but having played with them I am sure many people will use this in a lot of their content.

I had to shoot some footage using my camera to test out the proDAD Mercalli V4 image stabiliser. Its really very good and was working well even on footage I intentionally ruined. I think for me as a person who makes gameplays for YouTube it won’t be very useful but if you are recording family videos, weddings etc this is going to be a godsend.

One notable omission is that AC-3 Dolby Digital Pro has been removed and I understand the reason for this, however, I think as many people used this format for outputting to Blu-ray and DVD it is perhaps something that should be returned if Magix doesn’t want to lose sales to Adobe.

I have been rendering quite a lot of videos with Vegas 14 and felt that it might be a little slow, I don’t see the option to use the GPU and assume it is on by default, however, two days ago I rendered the same clip with Vegas 13 and then Vegas 14, I got very similar results so assumed that the GPU is indeed being utilised, I then took that same clip and rendered it with Adobe Premier Elements.

I’m sorry to say that Adobe was several minutes faster. Overall the time to create a finished video was practically identical however as I find the Adobe interface slow and clunky. It wasn’t as easy to do this test as I had hoped as some formats were not compatible with Adobe yet, I have been testing many different video capture programs over the past three months and Vegas 14 can accept video produced by all of them.

Another problem is that for some unknown legal issue, MAGIX had to remove all references to “Sony” from the software and this has caused an issue with plugin compatibility so, I am pretty sure all of the plugins you use will need to be updated in order to get them working again. You can find out more about this at the Vegas Pro Forum on Vegas Creative Software.

I am not thinking about the comparison between Vegas 14 and previous iterations now and just looking at the software for what it is and there are an incredible amount of features that will allow you to create the content you want.

I have tried many ways to present this information, however, the following is taken directly from the MAGIX Vegas 14 site as it is the easiest to digest and most complete format.

Expanded edit mode

The advanced editing mode makes trimming easier than before. Neighbouring frames are visible in the timeline and can be trimmed using mouse or keyboard. Using a loop section, you can also edit adjacent frames during playback.

Sync Link

Establish a hierarchical relationship between timeline events during editing. Move Child events independently of their Parent event, or move the Parent event and all of its Child events simultaneously to keep the family in perfect sync.

Multicamera editing

Color match

Match colors between clips in the highly versatile and powerful L*a*b* color space. Simply select a preset or select an image for custom optimization using control elements.

Compositing modes

The software uses a multi-layer, top-down paradigm for compositing and masking, which enables you to assign tracks as Parent or Child tracks. Apply Compositor Effects to create stylized lighting and textured looks. An impressive array of compositing modes provides comprehensive options for visual design. The 3D Compositing mode enables tracks to be moved and rotated anywhere in 3D space, and the results can be used in a stereoscopic 3D project.

Moving on to the different packages I thought I should address the confusion about the different versions of MAGIX Vegas Pro available. Here is a breakdown of each and a picture of the associated packaging.

VEGAS PRO 14 EDIT

This is VEGAS Pro 14 only. It does not include the Blu-ray and DVD authoring software VEGAS DVD Architect and you will not get any of the 3rd party titling or image stabilisation software.  If you want pro level features on a limited budget and don’t need the additional add-ons then this is the version to get.

VEGAS PRO 14

This is VEGAS Pro 14 and also includes Blu-ray and DVD authoring software VEGAS DVD Architect as well as NewBlueFX “Looks” colour filter pack, NewBlueFX Titler Pro Express and proDAD Mercalli V4.

VEGAS PRO 14 SUITE

This is the VEGAS Pro 14 box with everything. As well as the NewBlue and proDAD add-ons included in the Pro version Magix has teamed up with Boris FX to add some seriously powerful plugins to Vegas Pro 14 Suite. Boris FX is a premium software application company who have been expanding rapidly during the last few years and now own Sapphire and Mocha as part of their business.

The three Boris FX packs included are Boris FX Key and Blend Unit is an extremely powerful chroma key/green screen application Boris FX Match Move Unit is the best motion tracking software around and you can also obscure objects in real time. Boris FX 3D Objects Unit lets you create 3D Text and Shapes.

If I am able to secure the Boris FX Suite I will write a separate review of those software plugins as they are quite interesting on their own.

There is a free trial of MAGIX Vegas 14 available here and I really suggest you take a look at it before committing a huge chunk of cash but if you don’t have any video editing software, then I would recommend MAGIX Vegas 14 as my number one choice for video editing. If you have Vegas 13 and wouldn’t use any of the updates then you still have a fantastic piece of software and I wouldn’t upgrade. If you have any other software versions or even Adobe Premiere Pro, MAGIX Vegas 14 is simply the best video editing software I have ever used.

This then is an incredibly complete, complicated yet still easy to use piece of software. You can learn the basics and create excellent content, you can learn the software backwards and produce professional quality footage. We are really talking about the complete package with MAGIX Vegas 14 and I have to say that coming into this review that Vegas has been my preferred video editor for many years, I prefer the interface to all other video editors and it has that “I know what I am doing” factor which is so important for a tool. I may be a little biased but I will admit to worrying a little when MAGIX bought the rights. My overall impressions of MAGIX Vegas 14 and thinking about it compared to other versions and in the hands of new owners, is that this is still a great tool for creating and editing videos. It has improved on the previous version in some notable ways but the biggest thing to take away is this. MAGIX listen to their customers and make changes that benefit us and I for one like that a lot.

    1. There is a version that is available called Movie Studio 14. It is a very similar product in terms of usability that could do the job for you. I used to use it for YouTube so I know it works well for that and it’s only around £30-50 depending on where you buy it from.
