The Surge.

The Surge is a science fiction, action role-playing video game developed by Deck13 Interactive and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game looks very similar to their previous game, Lords Of The Fallen, but fortunately, it does not feel anything like it and that is a really good thing. Where Lords of the Fallen is a sluggish, slow and dreary affair, The Surge is fast paced, exciting and reminds me why grinding for gear is fun.

The Surge’s world has fallen to pieces, in part because mega-corporations have failed as stewards of the earth. Not to worry, though, as they also offer the cure. You play as Warren, a paraplegic looking for work with CREO. In the opening moments, you register for implants that could cure you but will require you to work for CREO using an exoskeleton. As well as boosting your strength and speed the exoskeleton allows you to walk again. In payment for giving you the gift of legs CREO takes your soul. During a very interesting cutscene, you discover that you have not been given any anaesthetic and then tortured as a robotic needle machine, think Han Solo in the first Star Wars movie, implants the exoskeleton rig on your body. As you progress in The Surge, you will meet different characters that you can interact with and also get side quests from them which will then grant you different resources as payment for completing the quest, in turn, allowing you to upgrade the suit. The voice acting is fabulous and helps to immerse you in the gritty industrialised world you are a now a part of.

 

The Surge’s third-person combat requires you to think about what you are doing and requires your full attention. Warren’s semi-mechanical frame means he moves slightly slower, but fights still unfold at a lightning pace; winning means learning the perfect opportunities to jump in and out of melee range and careful management of your stamina bar. The movement of the character is fluid and I am very pleased that you can still feel the weight of the character without feeling like you need to push your keys all the way in to get him to move, there is a really nice flow to movement and as you traverse the terrain, climbing over obstacles or avoiding attacks the precision and control you have is second to none. If you wail on an armoured limb long enough you will build up the energy meter high enough for you to sever it from your foe giving you an increased chance of getting that particular attachment or weapon, at worst you will salvage a small amount of damaged armour that can be used in crafting or upgrading your own version man-machine.

 

The safe havens in The Surge are medical bays and they serve as your place to respawn after being killed (you will be killed an awful lot), regain your healing items, make new armour or other tech and level up your character. You will die a lot so be warned that any defeat will also see your tech scraps dropped at the location where you died. This means returning to them past the now respawned enemies on route or losing them for good, you only have a short amount of time to return so you may spend a lot of time killing enemies a little bit closer to home.

 

This mechanic is key to making the game exciting the moment you have something to lose. When you remove an appendage from an enemy and get granted some awesome loot you need to stop and think if it is worth carrying on or should you really get back to the med bay and save it. The problem you have now though is that you have to make your way through the same enemies once again to get back to where you were. It makes for a fantastic gaming experience, always on the edge of your seat sometimes making good decisions and at other times wishing you had not been so greedy.

 

The battles are thoughtful affairs and understanding how each enemy attacks is going to be your key to success. The boss battles are impressive affairs with you having to beat the life out of some truly insurmountable foes. The feeling I get when I finally beat a stubborn boss sums up the reason I game. I think that is the crux of this game. It is rewarding. Sure there are tonnes of frustrations when you are killed for the 11th time in a row because you made one mistake and there will be times when you will cry into your keyboard but when you finally get the win, when you actually realise you did something perfectly you can quite rightly stand in the street punching passersby because you feel like you are royalty, that no one can touch you as you have beaten these incredibly tough opponents.

 

I wanted to play this game from the moment I heard about it however, I approached this review quite worried about what I would get. I felt that Dark Souls 3 was probably the best game I had ever played and that it was perfect but somehow, The Surge makes me want to play it more, I like the world more, the movement, the combat. It’s near perfection for me. It is better than any game I have ever played. I literally cannot find anything to complain about. Maybe I could say that the first boss battle arena was too obvious but when I saw it and knew I was about to get into it with some huge mech I felt like I had literally passed out because I was weeing myself so much from fear and excitement, a very common problem for the people who play these types of games.

 

The Surge gave me what I wanted and cannot wait for the next IP from Deck13.
